GEORGIE HOPTON
"Riding Out"
Georgie Hopton (born 1967, North Yorkshire) graduated from St Martins in 1989 with a series of sculptures although she’d enrolled on a painting degree and she’s been working between the two mediums ever since and more recently with photography. Hopton’s work is often playful, a mix of hope tinged with the pathos of what she calls ‘l’hommage pathetique’.

‘Riding Out ’ is taken from a new body of work called ‘Harvest’ that includes self-portraits with flowers and fruit that she grows herself. Cheeky, witty and strangely beguiling, Hopton’s image-making contains a healthy mix of tragedy and comedy and is never quite what it seems on the surface of things. Hopton was nominated for the Maxmara prize for women in 2007.
