Alice Herrick was born in London and lived there until 2023 when she made the longed for move to Margate to be by the sea.
The World is Your Oyster is an ongoing series of imagined characters on oyster shells found and painted in Margate.
Alice’s talent for portraiture and passion for beach combing fuse in these beautiful and often haunting pieces. Carefully selected on numerous walks, each shell has a quality which suggests particular features and expressions that emerge in the painting process.
The pieces are titled with names from memorial benches along the coast, where the oyster shells are found as a tribute to those strangers, who also loved Westbrook Bay. They are a reflection of the nature of time in the history of each shell and rock, the tides, the walks, the eyes down searching and a lifetime of studying the human face.
Alice is a multi-disciplinary artist specialising in drawing and painting. She has a fine art degree from Kingston University, a painting Masters from Chelsea College of Art and was founding director of Herrick Gallery in Shoreditch & Mayfair.
