“These paintings are from a series I made painted on top of images from a BBC Good Food pasta recipe book. In making these, I was figuring out the place of imagery within my work, having previously considered myself to be more of an abstract painter.
I liked how, when cut out from the full page, the plates & food became quite painterly & harder to define, and often quite beautiful abstract objects. I also enjoyed the process of painting over photos. Simultaneously hiding & revealing an image felt like an odd thing to do, and I like it when things don’t quite make sense.
I was also interested in the aspirational lifestyle element of the original photography; I think food photography has a lot to do with class wrapped up in it.”
