Katie Pratt is an abstract painter, living and working in London.
These abstract oil paintings progress from chaotic beginnings towards systemic order. The grounds of the works are laid with hasty, exaggerated gestures. Sometimes fluid, sometime viscous, paint is brushed roughly and poured on the canvas.
Visual systems are devised in an endeavour to impose organisation on the disordered surface of the underpainting. Successive rules accumulate, setting up contradiction and overlaying structures so that the composition increases in complexity. The paintings exhibit simultaneously an organic and a geometric quality.
These paintings contemplate how humans organise, socially and politically. The use of rules reflects the dilemmas of societal regulation and how the law is implemented.
The work is exhibited internationally, recently in the John Moores Painting Prize 2021. Winner of Jerwood Painting Prize 2021 and Thermae Bath Spa Commission 2019.
