Katie Pratt is a painter, living and working in London.
These abstract oil paintings impose organisation on disordered, splashy paint. The artworks exhibit a simultaneously organic and geometric quality.
The paintings begin with exaggerated, roughly-brushed gestures or colour squeezed directly out of the tube. Paint is flicked, flung or poured on the surface.
Systems arrange the messy ground, leading to intricate, unexpected compositions. Any recurring patterns in the paint are highlighted and linked up. The imagery details complex networks interacting with the colourful, material picture-plane.
These paintings contemplate how humans organise, socially and politically.
The work is exhibited internationally, recently in the John Moores Painting Prize 2021. Winner of Jerwood Painting Prize 2001 and Thermae Bath Spa Commission 2019.
