Simon Bill is an artist and writer, with solo exhibitions at Cabinet Gallery (London), Stuart Shave/Modern Art (London), Patrick Painter (Los Angeles) and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead). His novel ‘Artist in Residence’ (pub.2016 Sort of Books) has been optioned and is currently in development for TV with Corestar Media.
The editioned print Bill offers is based on one of five Op Art murals he completed in 2022, depicting bright geometric optical illusions. Such imagery will be familiar as a kind of entertainment or puzzle – in, for example, the 90s ‘Magic Eye’ craze, Victorian stereoscopic viewers, 3D movies, and various memes. But its origins are in neuroscience. These images, in which static forms seem to move, or flash, or glow, and 2D seems 3D, and so on, began as research tools in the growing field of visual perception research.
