Suzi Teal is a British artist based in London. She is a 2025 graduate of BA Photography at London College of Communication (UAL).
Her work seeks to bring unstillness to still life, subverting the traditional art form through sculpture and photography. The process starts by sculpting a cake from clay and then squishing it once to create the handprint. Once it’s dry, the cake is collaged with cookbook imagery and an acrylic spray is applied to seal it. “I’ve always been drawn to art that makes everyday objects thought-provoking, forcing us to think differently about the mundane, humdrum nature of day-to-day life. The Design Museum’s exhibition Objects of Desire, one of the first exhibitions I saw when I first moved to London, sparked my interest in the phrase. The squashed nature of my cakes creates a satisfying tactile experience when the viewer clutches it in the same way it was squashed. Not only does this connect the audience with the artist, but it also becomes a desirable object: akin to holding a smooth pebble. Furthermore, the use of vivid cookbook imagery, as well as the symbolic and cultural significance of cake as an object, enhances this desire to interact with the sculptures.
