Dust and Shadow Are We takes its title from the Roman poet Horace, who reminds us that we are but ‘dust and shadow’. Within the skull’s form, two allegorical muses - one of poetry, the other of painting - lean close in whispered dialogue. Their flowing gowns seem to spill beyond the confines of bone, as if art itself cannot be contained. In this union of mortality and beauty, Gjoen suggests that while life is fleeting, creativity transcends the shadow.
