Haus of Lucy is not only obsessed with marrying together the old and the new, but also the mundane and ordinary - the things we use and see around us every day. And how better to explore this than with a traditional Delft style hand painted tile! This tile features a tampon because here in the UK we still experience period poverty while globally, people who menstruate are ostrasized from basic activities like eating certain foods or socialising. The cultural shame attached to menstruation and a shortage of resources stop women from going to school and working every day. Periods affect 50% of the world's population and in the US, period products were only made free in prisons in 2018. So it may be small and humble, but the tampon is an absolute game changer. Just think, with just one tampon, you can go horse riding, skiing, para gliding and rollerblading, all whilst wearing white jeans!
